Also even better news for those of us who have the CD already, the band is working on a new CD right now. So we have a lot of Black Water Rising to look forward to.

Ride For Dime Philly Saturday June 18TH 2011

What Is Ride For Dime?

Ride For Dime Inc, a 501 (c) 3, charitable organization, honors the lives of guitar hero and friend, “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott, Jeff Thompson, Nathan Bray, and Erin Halk. Ride for Dime has proudly given back to charities that were of interest to Darrell during his life as well as charities he would have been proud to be a part of, like Little Kids Rock. In 2010, we formed and began funding our own “Ride for Dime Scholarship Fund.”

Originally formed in Arlington, Texas, in 2005 by Darrell’s friends and family, the organization has now grown to having six nationwide chapters. Each chapter will hold its own event, and all proceeds go directly to our two chosen charities, Little Kids Rock, and The RFD Scholarship Fund. Our current chapters include: Texas, Philadelphia, Chicago, Florida, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.

Saturday June 18TH 2011 – The Ride For Dime Philly Chapter rolled through Philadelphia PA and ended at MC Stew’s Pub in Levittown PA with a fantastic showing of support for a great cause. Proceeds to Benefit Little Kids Rock and the RFD Scholarship Fund.

The ride kicked off in Northeast Philadelphia at Linden Ave and State Rd. ending up at Mc Stew’s Pub in Levittown PA around 8pm. That’s when the beer stated to flow and the bands started to rock.

There were tons of great raffle prizes being won through out the night including gift baskets containing gifts cards to American Saints Tattoo Shop and Inkwell Philly, Tickets to a Philadelphia Phillies game, Guitars and autographs from Big Dad Ritch of Texas Hippie Coalition and Nick Catanese of Black Label Society and more.

The musical lineup for the night….. Release, Hangman’s Cry, Thunder Brew and Black Water Rising. The last band to play was a Pantera Tribute band called Unscarred who saw fit to come armed with a set list of fan favorites.

I had the opportunity to hang out with a lot of people at this event. The passion among the fans was intense at times. Everyone had a Pantera / Dimebag story to tell. And everyone had a smile on theie face as they told it. This event was definitely a celibration of the lives of  “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott, Jeff Thompson, Nathan Bray, and Erin Halk.

Last but not least I have to say congratulations goes out to Joe Jones and to all who volunteered for putting together a great event. Everyone seemed to have a blast.

ANCHORED SHOW REVIEW & INTERVIEW NYC Irving Plaza 6-4-11

ANCHORED SHOW REVIEW & INTERVIEW NYC Irving Plaza 6-4-11

ANCHORED played Irving Plaza Saturday June 4th as part of the Uranium Tour Featuring Black Label Society, Rev Theory and Hourcast. Considering the circumstances they were handed, I would say they did a kick ass job and made a lot of new fans along the way.

First let me say, for the first three bands lighting was terrible, the sound was muddy and the bands had no room on the stage to move. That didn’t stop Anchored from “Getting Dirty In New York“.

You never hear a band acknowledge they are the fluffer band on the bill. The funny thing that stuck out to me was singer Brandan Narrell not only acknowledged it but said “we know we are the fluffer band on this tour. It’s ok to hate us and throw shit if you want.”

The Black Label fans did quite the opposite. They embraced the band and you could easily see this by looking at their merch table where the band signed CD’s and Tee Shirts for their fans.

The reason I am stressing this point is because it’s not easy to open for an iconic band like Black Label Society. I have seen great bands open for Metallica, Slayer and Ozzy that have been bashed and torn to shreds because the fans only want to see the band they came for. And that would be the headliner.

Considering Anchored was the lightest band on the bill, they took a chance going on this tour and won some new fans in the process.

I caught up with ANCHORED Guitarist B.G. SIMPSON before show their set. Check It Out.

RN: How has the tour been going for you guys?

B.G. SIMPSON: I would say it’s been going pretty good. All the bands get along real good. We have had a lot of fun hanging out with all the guys.

RN: I read on your facebook page that someone showed up to one of the shows with a gun.

(B.G. SIMPSON – FACEBOOK ENTRY – Interesting night last night in St. Louis. We heard they arrested a guy that had two fully loaded clips and a loaded gun last night at the show… A huge thanks goes out to The Pageant security and police for getting this guy.. Who the hell brings 2 fully loaded clips and a loaded gun to a rock show?!?!)

B.G. SIMPSON: Wow see how thing get messed up. While at the show we heard some one was trying to get in to the venue with a gun. Then we heard it was a case of beer. To be honest I have no idea what was going on. None the less it was kind of scary when we first heard it. Bands show up to put on a rock show and some people want to spend money on a ticket, show up and do crazy things.

RN: What’s next for you guys after this tour?

B.G. SIMPSON: We just got confirmed for the Volbeat Tour starting in July.

RN: Any East Coast dates?

B.G. SIMPSON: Yes, we will be back in New York. Going up to Canada and going back out to California. It’s going to be about a 21 to 24 date tour.  It should be a good run.

RN: I just want to follow up on a few things I spoke with Brandan (Narrell) about a few weeks back.

B.G. SIMPSON: Go a head. Shoot.

RN: What’s going on with your live DVD? Do you have an update for me?

B.G. SIMPSON: We just got our ruff copy back the other day. We all watched it on the bus and we all want to add a few more things here and there but it should be ready to be released in the next month or two.

RN: Have you started working on new stuff yet? Brandon told me you have not, but will be shortly.

B.G. SIMPSON: We are going to go in with a producer friend of ours and another song writer soon and see what we come up with. And start recording a new album and hopefully have it out by next year.

Thank you to B.G. Simpson for taking the time to speak with me. And thank you to Anchored for putting on a great show.

ZO2 SHOW REVIEW & INTERVIEW PHILADELPHIA PA 6/3/11

FOR PICTURES OF THE SHOW CLICK HERE

ZO2 played North Star Bar Friday June 3erd. Support coming from The Better Half and Phantasm. ZO2 played songs from all three of their CD’s as well as two new songs ‘Heart Of  Confusion’ and ‘That’s What’s Up’ that are only available for download at this time.

From the time the band took the stage to the end, the crowd didn’t stop moving. ZO2’s brand of Rock N Roll far surpasses the bands they grew up admiring. In my opinion they are one of 2 newer bands that do it the right way.

What do I mean “the right way” you ask?  Well I’ll tell you. They have great songs with a lot of melody and hooks. And on stage they have fun. They want to be there and it shows. They have smiles ear to ear and they give every thing they got when they are up there.

I have seen ZO2 perform quite a few times but it was not until this show that I realized how dedicated their fans truly are. They came from different states to show their love and support, some drove eight hours. If that’s not dedication I don’t know what is.

If you have not seen ZO2 live yet than you really are missing out. The bands high energy performance and the amount of fun the band and fans have at a ZO2 show will make you want to go back. I keep going back.

ZO2 also played The Recher Theatre in MD. along with BANG TANGO and KIP WINGER the next night, Saturday June 4th.

I was not there but one of our readers “Joel Walter” was there. And here is what he had to say  “ZO2 ROCKED THE HOUSE AT THE RECHER THEATRE, THEY ARE ENTERTAING AS HELL AND COULD BLOW THE DOORS OFF AT ANY ROCK VENUE”

I had a chance to speak with Paulie and David before they took the stage check it out.

RN: Are you working on any new material?

Paulie:  Yes we just released four new singles that are available online. We also have songs that we wanted to put out once a month but decided not to do it because fans have told us that they want a new record as well.

RN: Do you have a timeline for the new record?

Paulie: We are shooting for early next year.

RN: Will the new songs you have online now make it on to the new record?

David:  Yes that’s the plan. We kind of have been going back and forth on this. Because of the way the music industry is going. It seems like a lot of new music is going straight to download. But what we are realizing is that a lot of our fans still have not adopted that mentality yet. Some have and some have not. So a lot of our fans don’t even realize we have songs you can download. The plan was to put the songs out online and in the end put them all out on one CD. But we think we are going with a new CD because we think our fans would like that more than the downloads.

RN: Well from a fans point of view. I don’t mind downloads. But I would rather have the CD in my hand and read the liner notes and have the cover art. So I understand that. Also I think there is a diffrance in age as well. Younger people I think perfer downloads over CD’s.

Paulie:  Exactly, this way you will have the option. People that want the download can get it and for the people that do want the CD can get it as well.

RN: The last time I spoke to you guys I asked why you stuck to the east coast and have not played other markets. And this is the first time you have played  Philadelphia in a while right? Are you looking into other markets?

Paulie: It’s been a while since we played here. The place we used to play at closed down. Every place is closing down.  We try and find places that are still thriving. We would love to hit the whole country again. But it’s not financially feasible. That’s why we want to put out another record it gives a reason to go out and push.

David:  It gives other people a reason to back you as well. Record labels, investors and management. You are only as good as your next product.

RN: I don’t mean any disrespect by my next question. Pretty much I wanted to ask you if you have gotten disillusioned. You are up to album three with ‘Casino Logic‘. You are working on album four now. Your TV show was great but got cancelled. Have you gotten beaten down from not making it as far as you would have liked to by now?

Paulie: If you are asking “are we where we wanted to be, rich and famous” no we are not there yet. We have gotten a lot farther than a lot of other people and we are not nearly as far along as we need to be or want to be. And as far as being disillusioned, we don’t get disillusioned we just don’t. We do get bummed, we are human. But if you think of anyone that has ever done anything great, not even in music I mean in the whole world they always failed and failed and kept going until they got where they wanted to be.

David: If disillusionment takes you out of the game, than you’re in the wrong game. Especially in this industry. Every band that has gotten any kind of success has their failure stories, their bankruptcy stories, their we almost quit stories.

Paulie: I think you only get disillusioned when you stop enjoying it. I think that’s when you should think of doing some thing else. There are people doing this that should not be, because they are not happy. But they don’t know how to do anything else. This is their only means to make a living. Luckily for us we can do other things to make money. I know we can make a lot more money doing something else but this is what we love to do. The day we don’t enjoy this any more is the day we will say “ok let’s try something else” but we still enjoy it. So why would we be disillusioned?

RN: Let’s talk about Z-ROCK Season Three what’s going on?

Paulie: Season Three, we need to find a new network. It’s like changing record labels. People don’t realize how frustrating and annoying it can be. We just need to find a new home for it. We have script ideas and everything we just need to find the right home.

David: I believe there is a facebook page that some fans have started call bring Z-ROCK Back. From what I heard it just hit 500 likes in the first week. It’s little things like this that stirs up the pot and gets people interested again. So we are moving forward and if the interest is there from the fans and everyone else hopefully the networks will see that.

RN: Ok lets get serious shall we?

David:  ok

RN: Since the first season of Z-ROCK how many girls have you meet to your surprise have had a Z cut out in their pubes?

Paulie: HA HA, to be honest none.

RN: Dude you’re supposed to lie to me. Tell me something to make that question work.

Paulie:  I’ll tell you why, I generally go for girls that are shaved clean.

David: Well let this stand as an announcement. Lets hope your female readers start shaving some Z’s

Thank you to David and Paulie for taking the time to talk with me before they hit the stage in Philly.

Blackwarter James E.P. VOL.1 CD Review & Interview

I received a copy of the Blackwarter James E.P. VOL.1 about two weeks ago. I received it a day before I had to take a road trip and played it on the drive. It was definitely good driving music. Considering the trip was about four and a half hours each way. This didn’t boar me or put me to sleep. In fact it was quite the opposite. The only problem I had with it was, it only six songs. It has an early Areosmith/Buck Cherry vibe to it. The songs are full of hooks and infectious melodies. Not to mention the guitar work between Deanna Passarella and Chris James gels well. Josh Burns drops grooving bass lines through out the disc. And Todd Schlosser’s back beat holds it all together. I can only be described it as straight up no frills Rock N Roll. With six songs and certainly no filler I have to give this CD a 6 out of 6.

Blackwater James is:

Christopher James – vocals and guitars

Deanna Passarella – guitars/backing vocals

Josh Burns – bass/backing  vocals

Todd Schlosser – drums/backing vocals

We had a chance to speak with Christopher James and Todd Schlosser about their new E.P. VOL 1 here is what they had to say

RN: How does your new EP, Vol.1 differ from your last CD.

Christopher James: Our last CD we did completely in house at our rehearsal space. And it coast us absolutely no money what so ever. We were really surprised by the response we got from it.  So this time around we decided to spend a little bite of money. And do an E.P.

RN: How long did it take you to record?

Christopher James: About a week.

Todd Schlosser: About five days

RN: Why didn’t you go all the way and record a full length CD?

Todd Schlosser: We really wanted something we felt comfortable shopping. And we think with the E.P. we accomplished that. The first record is pretty raw. It’s decent but I think it describes where we were the time. The E.P. is more polished and it’s tracked live. We all got in the room together and did all the instrumentation live.

RN: How do you guys write your songs? Is there any one person that writes or is it a group effort?

Christopher James: We all write in the same room together. Even lyrically. We say how does the music make us feel. Than one of us will come up with a hook and than we will come up with a story around that hook. And totally write around it.

RN: So there are no deep seeded stories behind any of your songs?

Christopher James: It’s about half and half. We try not to get really deep. On the first record there is a lot more depth as far as lyrical content. A lot of it is about relationships or party experiences either I or Deanna have had.

RN: Do you have more songs that could possibly be added to make a new full length CD?

Christopher James: We consistently write. We have what would essentially be Vol.2 done. But what we would like to do is shop this E.P. and see where it goes. And by that time we will have a good thirty song catalog that we can work with publishing or any of the majors or who knows. We just think it would be more viable if we had a full catalog to offer up.
