Interview w/ Guitarist Ace Von Johnson of Faster Pussycat

I had a chance to speak with Guitarist Ace Von Johnson of Faster Pussycat. The band has a few shows on the east coast this month including Food Truck and Rock Carnival being held in Clark NJ on September 19th as well as a stop in Reading PA. check out the interview below.

Dante: When will fans hear new Faster Pussycat music?

Ace Von Johnson: That seems to be something we get asked a lot. We have been working on new music for a few years now. We have a few songs that are done but ultimately it boils down to what Taime wants to do. I think we may do an EP but again it’s up to Taime. Everyone wants to know when it’s going to be done but when we get off the road everyone seems to scatter. I hope it will be out next year but I am not making any promises because like I said it’s up to Taime.

Dante: In terms of musical direction what are you guys shooting for? Is it going to be more like the first album or more like The Power & The Glory Hole or somewhere in the middle?

Ace Von Johnson: I can tell you right now it’s going to sound like the first record meets Glory Hole. I think we are leaning more towards an old school vibe. Danny has been writing with Taime and I have been writing with Taime. In terms of production, Glory Hole was done at Taime’s house in his home studio. But this time around we have been going to outside studios I think it’s going to have more of an old school vibe rather than a polished industrial feel.

Dante: You guys just did the Cathouse Reunion show that looked like a lot of fun.

Ace Von Johnson: It was great, it was a lot of fun. There was about 10,000 people in attendance. I know Riki (Rachtman) was happy. I can only imagine it was kind of like a high school reunion for a lot of these guys. Faster Pussycat had some of the original guys come out for half the set. We had Brent Muscat, Eric Stacy and Greg Steele out for the last few songs. It was really cool. A lot of the newer guys like me are my buddies like Lance Eric from Bang Tango and Tony from Tom Keifer‘s band and Michael Grant from L.A.Guns we are the newer guys and it was cool to have them around for me and it was cool for some of the older guys who may not have seen each other in a couple of years. It really was one for the books.

Dante: I watched the you tube videos and I think it was cool that the current members did not step down, all you guys performed together.

Ace Von Johnson: That was decided a few days before. I told Taime that I was cool with whatever he wanted to do. But Taime felt that we are the guys in the band now and there is no reason for us to step down. Besides Greg Steele comes up with us once in a while and plays as a third guitar player and recently Brent has played with us as well. And the stage was back lined enough to where everyone was able to plug in and play so yeah it was cool to have the old school and the new together on stage. And we are all friends anyway. I talk to Greg about once a month and I talk to Muscat every once in while and Eric all the time, I see him out and about everywhere. I am sure some of the fans would have liked us to step down and I was more than happy to do whatever they wanted to do but it worked out great.

Dante: As of late there has been a recent back and forth argument among fans and a few artist in the rock / metal world regarding replacement players. ( If you don’t know what I am talking about, your out of the loop and I am not adding links. look it up for yourself ) For me, I am happy bands just keep coming around and doing shows. How do you feel about it?

Ace Von Johnson: When I see or hear people talking about it, as a fan I get it. Having an original lineup in a band is cool., but I always compare it to…..and say, “Dude are you still with Sally from high school”? and he says, ”Dude that was 30 years ago”, and I say, “Exactly”. It’s almost the same thing. People get married, people have kids, people have fall outs in their relationships with each other. To do this for a lifetime, it’s not easy. I am 32 years old. I have been doing this since I have been a teenager. I can not imagine doing this with the same people I started out with. I think it would add a little more legitimacy to any band if there was more than one original member in it but some times that’s just not the case. There are not a lot of bands out there with all original members. Technically speaking I am a member of this band and I have been for almost six years and that is a few years longer than some of the original members. I didn’t play on the albums from the heyday so if people want to call me a hired gun or a scab player go a head I don’t care and I don’t have to agree, we all have to make a living.

Dante: You guys are also playing the first Food Truck and Rock Carnival being held in Clark NJ on September 18th 19th and 20th you guys are set to play on the 19th are you looking forward to it and what can people expect that have never seen you before.

Ace Von Johnson: The line up is really strong. You have Stone Temple Pilots, Slash and Godsmack. I think there is something for everyone. I don’t think there is anyone like us on the bill. With us you get a sleazy, gritty rock show that is high energy. I know there will be Faster Pussycat fans there but I also encourage people that have not seen us yet to check us out and if you are fans of ours check out the other acts as well. Like I said there is something for everyone there. As well as a lot of great food.
