GWAR did not disappoint when they came through Philadelphia PA this past Sunday 12-30 performing at North Seventh. ( Formerly known as The Electric Factory ) In true GWAR fashion there was decapitations, ass rape with a crucifix and fuck ton of blood.
The Band opened with War On GRAW followed by Womb With A View. This is were the first decapitation, or should I say double decapitation happen. Lead singer Blothar raised his sword and cut the head off of his first victim and then the second head came off, spraying blood all over the first 10 to 15 rows of fans. ( GWAR fans love this. Many people wearing white tee shirts just to show how much blood they got hit with )
After the third song I’ll Be Your Monster I made my way to the back of the club for 2 reasons I wanted to capture some full stage images and I didn’t want to be covered in blood.
GWAR went on to play a fun filled 13 song set that included fan favorites Crushed By The Cross, Fuck This Place and El Presidente and closed with encore songs Phantom Limb and Sick Of You
The opening bands were great as well. Direct support came from Richmond,Virginia based, Iron Reagan a killer thrash band with a wicked groove. Vocalist Tony Foresta was really ill and you could hear it when he spoke to the crowd saying he didn’t want to cancel because Dave Brookie would not have canceled. What ever the reason, much respect because I have seen bands cancel for much less.
Against The Grain also performed. I didn’t think these guys would go over well on this bill but I was wrong. The crowd seemed to really like them and getting a good response from Philadelphia fans is a hard thing to do.
And then there was the local opening band, The Bad Luck 13 Riot Extravaganza. Their opening spot was toned down a little bit as it was being called a “No Blood Show”. For those who don’t know The Bad Luck 13 Riot Extravaganza is known for their extreme brutality at their shows most of the time time causing each other to bleed. And to be fair Philadelphia is the birth place of extreme but these guys have taken it to an entirely new level. To be honest I don’t think they really need to do that because their opening spot was great and I would put them up against any head liner without the violence.
